The sufficient production of ATP is essential for synthesis of new molecules and animal function (e.g. muscular work, transmission of nerve signals). ATP is provided by energy-yielding catabolic processes which therefore limit animal efficiency.

  1. in vivo measurements of
    • O2-consumption and CO2 - production
    • food uptake and monitoring of the body weight
  2. in vitro determination of
    • adenine nucleotide pool and key enzyme activities of catabolic pathways in six tissues (brain, heart, liver, kidney, gonads and muscle)
